Why We Created Our Dog Drying Mitts : Your New Post Walk Accessory

Handmade Dog Drying Mitts By Tweed and Tether

Living with dogs means muddy paws and damp coats are just part of everyday life. Over time we found ourselves constantly reaching for the same thing after every walk a big old towel hanging over the Aga or the radiator.

And while a large towel absolutely has its place when your dog is completely sodden after a proper soaking, we realised most of the time we were just doing quick wipe downs. Belly rubs after a muddy walk, drying paws before getting back in the car or those familiar little foot wipes after letting the dog out for a wee.

So we set out to create something simple and handy that could live by the back door, in the boot room or tucked into a dog walking bag. Something practical enough to use every day but still smart enough to hang up at home.

That’s how our Dog Drying Mitts came about, a simple and practical alternative to reaching for a large towel every time muddy paws come through the door.

Made from soft, absorbent cotton towelling, our dog drying mitts are perfect for that first quick wipe to remove excess moisture, mud and damp after a walk. They’re compact, easy to wash and far quicker to dry than a large towel and they look rather nice hanging up too.

Why We Don’t Make Dog Drying Robes

When we first shared a sneak peek of our dog drying mitts, we had quite a few people asking if we would be making dog drying robes.

The short answer is no. And there’s a reason for that.

Having worked with horses for many years, dealing with wet animals is something we’ve always taken seriously. Horses can get wet from rain, exercise or washing, and leaving them damp for too long can cause them to chill (expensive vet bills often follow sick horses). Because of this, drying horses properly is something that’s thought about carefully in the equine world.

Towelling fabric is fantastic for absorbing water quickly, which makes it ideal for removing that first layer of moisture from a wet coat. But once towelling becomes wet, it stays wet. When used as a full coat, it can hold that moisture against the animal rather than helping it move away.

For us, that’s why we prefer a slightly different approach.

Why Fleece Works So Well

Fleece is widely used in outdoor clothing for humans and has been a staple fabric in the equine world for years.

One of the reasons fleece is so useful is its moisture-wicking properties. Instead of simply absorbing water, fleece helps move moisture away from the body towards the outer surface of the fabric. This allows the inside layer to stay warm and comfortable while the moisture gradually evaporates.

This is why fleece rugs are commonly used on horses after exercise or washing they help the horse dry while keeping them warm.

The same principle works beautifully for dogs.

Our Simple Routine for Drying Dogs After Wet Walks

For us, the best approach is a simple two-step system.

First, use our Dog Drying Mitts to remove excess water, mud and damp from paws, legs and bellies.

Then, if your dog is still wet after their walk or wash, pop on one of our Country Fleece Dog Coats. The fleece helps keep them warm while the remaining moisture gradually evaporates meaning they are safe to leave on while life continues.

It’s a simple routine that works well on those very British wet days.

A Practical Little Addition

Our Dog Drying Mitts were designed to be a small but useful addition to everyday life with dogs.

Perfect for muddy paws, quick wipe downs and those daily trips in and out of the garden, they’re the kind of thing you find yourself reaching for again and again.

If you’re looking for a practical way to deal with muddy paws after walks, our Dog Drying Mitts are designed to make those everyday moments a little easier.

And sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that end up being the most useful.
