When it comes to our handmade rope dog collars, getting the size right makes all the difference. These aren’t your average one size fits all accessories and each collar is made to measure to ensure your dog is comfortable, secure and looking their very best.
Whether you choose our Clip & Ring Collar or a Slip Collar, here’s how to measure properly for a perfect fit every time.
Why Neck Measurement Matters
We always recommend measuring your dog’s actual neck, rather than an existing collar. Flat collars don’t reflect the true shape and fit once fastened as rope collars have their own unique curve and fastening styles which affect the final size. All our rope collars are made to order based on the size you give us, so an accurate measurement helps us get it spot on.
Clip & Ring Rope Collars
(Not Adjustable)
These collars fasten with a brass clip that attaches to a fixed ring super easy to pop on and off and great for everyday use. This is not adjustable, so the neck measurement is key.
How to Measure:
Wrap a soft tape snugly (but not tightly) around your dog’s neck where the collar will sit.
Add one inch to this measurement this gives the collar a bit of breathing space for a comfy fit without being baggy.
The finished number is the size you’ll send us when ordering.
Slip Rope Collars
(Goes Over the Head, Adjusts with Tension)
This style gently slips over your dog’s head and rests comfortably around the neck. It’s designed to tighten to a fixed knot if your dog pulls or tries to back out, then relaxes again when loose, ideal for safety and control without being restrictive. Because of how this style works, you’ll need to take two measurements:
Measurement 1 – Neck Size (Tightest Point):
Wrap the tape around your dog’s neck where the collar will sit.
Don’t add anything to this measurement this is where the knot will sit and defines the tightest point of the collar when tension is applied.
Measurement 2 – Head Size (Loosest Point):
Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog’s head remembering to allow for their ears too.
Add one inch to this measurement as this helps the collar slip over the head comfortably in both directions.
These two measurements let us craft a collar that’s both secure and easy to use.
